Utilizing Category Statistics to Increase Student Self Awareness and Guide Exam Preparation
Recently, Dan Thompson, Coordinator of Instructional Design, Assessment, and Educational Technology at the Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences, discussed his program’s use of ExamSoft’s category feature to map assessment items to the appropriate learning objective for each lesson in his webinar, “Utilizing Category Statistics to Increase Student Self Awareness and Guide Exam Preparation”
The key takeaways from the presentation include:
- Categories are a useful organizational tool when preparing for accreditation as well as identifying student performance issues.
- If done correctly, an entire curriculum can be mapped by linking assessment items with learning objectives, course goals, program goals, etc.
- Category statistics were well received during accreditation review and have encouraged continuous growth within the Center for Health Sciences.
Thompson’s presentation gives insight into the weak areas found in his program’s exam review process and the need for specific performance information required to provide students with crucial feedback. He also discussed student reception of the revised process and the impact that category use has had on student learning overall.
"Having a sound category structure in place makes exam revision an easier process overall."
