Learning about the Learners: Using Analytical Tools to Drive Curricular Decisions

Recently, Al Spiegel, Laptop Coordinator at Bergen Catholic High School, discussed the process of using ExamSoft data to explore exam-taker habits and adjust exams accordingly in his webinar, “Learning about the Learners: Using Analytical Tools to Drive Curricular Decisions.”

The key takeaways from his presentation include:

1. Ask students what train of thought led them to make an answer choice on an exam and adjust the learning experience accordingly.

2. Allow students to provide feedback when exams are complete.

3. Pay attention to start and end times as a security measure or as a means of judging exam difficulty as well.

Spiegel’s presentation guides listeners through the steps necessary to taking a look at exam construction from a larger perspective to improve the overall learning experience for students. He provides tips on which ExamSoft functions prove most useful during analysis efforts and offers insight into which questions to ask students when addressing issues of exam difficulty.

“I think it's important that we think about why we use our tests as a measure of assessment and what we do with the results from those tests.”
