Webinar Review: Ensuring a Secure Testing Environment

February 11, 2016 Stephanie Totty

Recently, Albert Spiegel, Laptop Program Coordinator, at Bergen Catholic High School, presented his tips and tricks on preventing and recognizing student cheating during exams in his webinar, “Ensuring a Secure Testing Environment.” Al has led Bergen Catholic’s 1:1 laptop program since 2006, providing technical support and instructional coaching to both students and teachers—during that time, he’s had to educate himself on both low and high-tech cheating tactics, and brainstorm ideas to create a safe, and fair testing environment for everyone involved.

Here are some of the key takeaways from his presentation:

  • Methods of cheating can range from very low, to very high tech—know these tricks!
  • Your student testing layout is an important tool you have to create a secure testing environment.
  • The placement of devices on desks or tables can deter cheating.
  • Digital assessment methods can provide data to help identify or corroborate academic dishonesty.

As Al mentions in his webinar, keeping assessment secure is an on-going battle—new methods for cheating are constantly being developed by students. Vigilance and the ability to update existing processes is key for both educators and proctors in order to make sure your exams stay secure. Several specific examples of academic dishonesty are presented within this webinar. Methods that are relevant for both K-12 and higher education will be shown, but ExamSoft-specific security measures will be emphasized.

A lot of students cheat because they’re simply given the opportunity to cheat—regardless of how we’re testing students, educators must be vigilant when creating the exam environment. – Albert Spiegel, Laptop Program Coordinator, Bergen Catholic High School
