How to Get Started: Planning, Goals, and Implementation of a New CBT/Assessment Model

March 2, 2016

Recently,  Evan Sanders, Associate Director of Curriculum Services, Harvard Medical School/Program in Medical Education, presented his tips and tricks on implementing a computer-based testing (CBT) model in his webinar, “How to Get Started: Planning, Goals, and Implementation of a New CBT/Assessment Model." Evan leads a team that is dedicated to the administrative management of the basic and social science curriculum required of all medical and dental students, and is also active in strategic planning for the curriculum and related initiatives such as teaching and learning space design and grant-funded educational projects.

Here are some of the key takeaways from his presentation:

1. Working with stakeholders to help ease your implementation process
2. Identifying your roll-out timeline (and sticking to it)
3. Structuring your operation for the greatest efficiency possible

Evan's presentation details strategies for adopting a computer-based testing (CBT) platform, the importance of buy-in from stakeholders, understanding the product, identifying a realistic timeline, and engaging faculty and staff throughout the initiative. He also offers insight on how to overcome factors that may inhibit the adoption of a CBT platform, and includes an interactive discussion about identifying and balancing short- and long-term CBT goals.

"Our faculty wanted a quick and easy way to analyze both student and question performance over time as well as a secure testing platform. After talking with peer schools using the platform, ExamSoft was the obvious solution." - Evan Sanders, Associate Director of Curriculum Services, Harvard Medical School/Program in Medical Education
