Teaching and Assessing Critical Thinking Using Assessments with Embedded Outcomes

August 13, 2015
Presented by: Dr. Tony Adams, Chair, Department of Periodontics and Preventive Sciences, School of Dentistry; and Dr. William B. Lushbaugh, Emeritus Professor of Microbiology, School of Medicine, and eLearning Consultant, Divisions of Information Services and Academic Affairs--both of the University of Mississippi Medical Center, Jackson, Mississippi. Teaching Critical thinking is an essential component of contemporary education and is typically mandated by accreditation agencies. However, development of objective and rapid Critical Thinking tests in health-care education remains somewhat elusive, particularly when attempting to evaluate decision-making with complex clinical situations. By using an embedded assessment platform, case-scenarios are presented in the form of multiple-choice questions that contain numerous multi-media items embedded in the question stem and/or in response answer options. The question and answer options are constructed to test students ability to analyze or synthesize information from embedded data to solve intricate puzzles replicating clinical decision-making. Typically, tests of Critical Thinking require examinees to make several unprompted steps of logic to arrive at a correct answer. This presentation will deal with the concept and construction of evaluating Critical Thinking assessments while utilizing various types of embedded multimedia.
