Satisfying Accreditation Requirements through Assessment Item Categorization

Recently, Dan Thompson, Coordinator of Instructional Design, Assessment, and Educational Technology at the Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences, discussed his program’s use of ExamSoft’s category feature to appropriately map assessment items to learning objectives as a means of satisfying accreditation requirements in his webinar, “Satisfying Accreditation Requirements through Assessment Item Categorization.”

The key takeaways from the presentation include:

  1. Categories are a useful organizational tool when preparing for accreditation.
  2. It is important to create an appropriate category structure for your institution.
  3. If done correctly, an entire curriculum can be mapped by linking assessment items with learning objectives, course goals, program goals, etc.

Thompson’s presentation gives insight into the backend process of using item categorization in curriculum mapping for accreditation purposes. He also discussed the roles of faculty and staff in creating a successful categorization structure.

"We can look at these statistics formatively and prove that our students are attaining learning objectives and that we are achieving what we set out to achieve with our program."
