Using ExamSoft Codings to Identify Gaps and Strengths with the NCLEX-RN Test Plan

Recently, Tommie L. Norris, Associate Dean of Evaluation and Effectiveness at The University of Tennessee Health Science Center’s College of Nursing, discussed how her program uses ExamSoft to code formative exam questions as a means of mapping NCSBN’s NCLEX-RN Test Plan in her webinar, “Using ExamSoft Codings to Identify Gaps and Strengths with the NCLEX-RN Test Plan.”

The key takeaways from the presentation include:

  1. Using abbreviation for outcomes keeps faculty from becoming overwhelmed with creating categories.
  2. Coding questions, whether it be to NCLEX outcomes or disease processes, helps educators give students specific feedback from ExamSoft’s Strengths & Opportunities report.
  3. Encourage students to keep Strengths & Opportunities reports on hand throughout the semester for quick reference during NCLEX reviews at the end of the year.

The presentation gives insight into the explicit process of mapping exams. Tommie also shares tips that her program uses to help alleviate stress that new faculty may experience when faced with creating categories to measure NCLEX-specific standards.

"Faculty really appreciate having detailed categories and reports to show them where they need to improve and where they’ve done well.”
