Recently, Ashley Castleberry, Director of Assessment and Assistant Professor at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Pharmacy in Little Rock, Arkansas, discussed the steps her program has taken to properly assess critical thinking among students in her webinar, “Getting Students to Think About Their Thinking Using ExamSoft Features.”
The key takeaways from the presentation include:
1. Metacognition is higher order cognition that essentially means thinking about thinking.
2. Three main skills are involved with metacognition: planning, monitoring, and evaluation.
3. Higher order thinking guides learning strategies, improves student performance, and develops critical thinking as well as lifelong learning.
Castleberry’s presentation provides insight into teaching and assessment methods that can be used to help students develop critical thinking. She also discussed which ExamSoft features are key to the success of these methods.
“We have to begin to teach students to learn for themselves because we aren’t always going to be here and material is constantly changing.”
