How to Create Meaningful Rubrics for Student Assessment

Recently, Dr. Aimee Strang, Assistant Dean of Curricular Assessment at the Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, discussed the power of a well-written rubric in her webinar, “How to Create Meaningful Rubrics for Student Assessment.”

The key takeaways from the presentation include:

  1. Remember your purpose when creating a rubric; make sure that all criteria ties directly to course learning objectives.
  2. Don't create rubric criteria for trivial features (design, neatness, etc.) that can't be tied to learning objectives.
  3. Once a rubric has been created, perform quality checks with peer faculty graders and/or students and make adjustments accordingly.

The presentation gives insight into the criteria necessary to create useful rubrics. Dr. Strang also gives tips on creating unique descriptions and assigning grading schemas.
