ExamSoft for Low-Stakes, Formative Tests and Quizzes

Recently, Donna K. Czarnecki, Lead CBT, Data, and Core Coordinator at the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s College of Medicine, discussed the benefits using ExamSoft to administer low-stakes, formative assessments in her webinar, “ExamSoft for Low-Stakes, Formative Tests and Quizzes.”

The key takeaways from the presentation include:

1. Allowing assessments to be available for download a few days before the actual formative exam helps address any technical issues that could arise beforehand.

2. Remote deletion of the exam is highly recommended shortly after exam completion (about 30 minutes post exam) to prevent opportunities for academic dishonesty.

3. Be mindful of the Remote Deletion date of exams, as once that date has been set, it cannot be updated.

The presentation gives insight into the differences between summative and formative assessment goals. Czarnecki also shares specific processes associated with her program’s formative assessment development.

"Formative assessment provides helpful feedback for students and helps faculty identify concepts that students may not be understanding before it’s too late.”
