Improving Student Learning and Meeting Program Requirements by Implementing Formative Assessment in Clinical Settings

Recently, Dan Thompson, Coordinator of Instructional Design, Assessment, and Educational Technology at the Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences, discussed the benefits of administering formative assessment during third and fourth year clinical rotations in his webinar, “Improving Student Learning and Meeting Program Requirements by Implementing Formative Assessment in Clinical Settings”

The key takeaways from the presentation include:

1. Changing the roster for formative assessments after each clinical rotation assures that students won’t have access to all of the assigned exams at once.

2. Be prepared to frequently reset passwords as students will forget.

3. Set reminders to rotate the student roster for assessments to avoid download issues that arise due to incorrect exam taker assignment.

Thompson’s presentation gives insight into enhancing the student learning experience through implementation of formative assessment during this crucial time period. He also discussed the specific process used to help students meet specific clinical objectives each each month.

“Formative assessments are important because it provides the continuous feedback gives students the opportunity to take ownership and accountability of their learning process.”
