Harnessing the Power of Categories: Using Categories to Improve Exam Questions

Recently, Donna K. Czarnecki, Lead CBT, Data, and Core Coordinator at the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s College of Medicine, discussed the use of the ExamSoft categories feature to foster faculty collaboration in reviewing banked exam questions to improve their performance in her webinar, “Harnessing the Power of Categories: Using Categories to Improve Exam Questions.”

The key takeaways from the presentation include:

1. When a question has been removed due to poor performance, it is crucial that they be tagged as such.

2. Tag questions for review as you import questions as opposed to after to save time.

3. Always include a deadline for the question review process.

The presentation gives insight into identifying exam questions that perform poorly. Czarnecki also introduced a system to track multiple levels of question changes.

“Taking the time to review exam questions may seem like a lot of work, but successful questions make it easier to properly measure how well your students are learning.”
