Harnessing the Power of Categories: Using Categories for Building Assessments

Recently, Donna K. Czarnecki, Lead CBT, Data, and Core Coordinator at the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s College of Medicine, discussed the use of the ExamSoft categories feature to foster faculty collaboration and maintain database integrity in her webinar, “Harnessing the Power of Categories: Using Categories for Building Assessments.”

The key takeaways from the presentation include:

  1. Deleting questions from a category folder will result in permanent deletion. To avoid this, simply remove the category assignment from the question instead.
  2. Categorizing questions allows for efficient management and measurement of expected learning outcomes.
  3. The Construction Zone folder allows additional faculty members to access categories while limiting access to the exam itself.

The presentation gives insight into building assessment categories in the ExamSoft database. Reasons to categorize questions, including benefits of faculty productivity, were also discussed.

“The biggest benefit of the categories feature is the ease and accuracy it offers when creating assessments.”
