Using Data to Demonstrate Achievement of Course Objectives and AACN Student Learning Outcomes

Recently, Jamie Lee, Assistant Professor and Undergraduate Testing Coordinator at James Madison University’s School of Nursing, discussed using ExamSoft to tag and blueprint exams to support compliance with accreditation standards set by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN)

in her webinar, “Using Data to Demonstrate Achievement of Course Objectives and AACN Student Learning Outcomes.”

The key takeaways from the presentation include:

  1. Set up a category plan that makes sense for your program’s specific needs.
  2. ExamSoft takes blueprinting a step further by allowing faculty to look at objectives individually, on a question-by-question basis.
  3. ExamSoft has been a great tool for looking at exactly how courses are performing longitudinally, with the data to prove it.

Lee’s presentation gives insight into the specific plan her nursing program used to set up categories to demonstrate accurate learning among students. She also discussed how her program developed a proactive, rather than a reactive, approach to providing evidence of student learning to the AACN.

“Using the data rendered from ExamSoft, we’re able to tell if we need to revise the exam question or if we need to revise the actual course.”
