Question Creation in ExamSoft for Nursing Educators

February 16, 2016 Stephanie Totty

My name is Aubrey Kintop, and I am an ExamSoft Account Manager for our incredible nursing education programs—one of the fastest growing verticals in our company! I work directly with nursing faculty members to share best practices, answer questions, and assist them with anything ExamSoft-related. I can’t wait to turn you all into ExamSoft question experts!

One of the first items on your to-do list (well, maybe second, after filling up your coffee cup) should be putting questions into your item banks, which you can accomplish either by manually creating questions in the software or by importing them. We have four main question types: multiple choice, fill in the blank, essay, and true or false. Today, I’d like to discuss a few nursing-specific question types to best prepare your students for the NCLEX!

With the majority of questions on the NCLEX being written at the application (or higher) level of Bloom’s, it is essential to use a variety of question types to best simulate the NCLEX for your students. “Hot-spot” questions are an integral feature of the NCLEX. One way to mimic these is to create a fill in the blank question and have students identify different objects in the attached picture, as shown below.

To create ordering questions, we also suggest using our fill in the blank question type. In the example below, you can see I’m asking students to correctly order Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Students would order them from greatest priority to least priority in their answers.

“Select all that apply” questions are another staple on the NCLEX. To create this type of item in ExamSoft, simply create a multiple-choice question and indicate all of the answer choices that are correct. Then, check the “Select All That Apply” checkbox. This requires that students choose all of the correct answers to get full credit, as shown below. If you want students to get some credit for each of the correct answers that they choose, select the “Partial Credit” checkbox instead.

Thank you for taking a few minutes out of your busy day to learn about different nursing-specific question types in ExamSoft. We know that increasing NCLEX pass rates is not an easy feat, but we’re confident that by using these question types, you will best prepare your undergraduate students for success!

If your questions are stored in another system (e.g., Blackboard, Canvas, LXR, ExamView, etc.), reach out to your account manager for details on the filters we have available for these external systems. We are more than happy to show you how to seamlessly import all your questions, no matter the type.
