Assessing Practicum: Using ExamSoft for “Non-Standard” Exam Formats

January 11, 2016
Presented by Dr. Shalizeh "Shelly" A. Patel and Dr. Richard Halpin ExamSoft has become the new digital pathway in proctoring “standard” exams (multiple-choice, fill-in-the blank and True/False style) at many academic institutions. Features such as immediate and interactive feedback, note taking, test question analysis, and grade breakdown can guide faculty members to review their questions, assess student’s understanding of complex concepts, and further develop them. In addition, students instantly receive their scores and are able to evaluate/discuss materials post-exam which can reinforce learning. However, many practicum-style examinations are still delivered in the traditional way, where students write their responses on paper and never have the opportunity to review the questions they missed. Furthermore, most instructors do not have the time available to read all the responses and score the exams in a timely matter. As time passes, students have less of a tendency to review old test materials, missing an opportunity to learn and faculty are less able to correct common misconceptions of the class. At The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston (UTSD), ExamSoft is now being used to assess practical exams. Still in the early stages of implementation, this process has already saved a substantial amount of faculty time in grading essay format questions and computing final scores. This webinar presents the integration, benefits and challenges of ExamSoft in UTSD’s Operative pre-clinical curriculum.
